MMP Staff Bios


 

Mark Sommer is an author, independent journalist, award-winning radio host, and internationally syndicated columnist who has written several books and hundreds of articles on national and international issues for major U.S. and foreign newspapers. His monthly columns on world affairs are syndicated in 12 languages to 100 countries by the Inter Press Service in Rome. In the United States, his articles have appeared on the editorial pages of The Christian Science Monitor, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, and Newsday. He hosts the syndicated radio program, "A World of Possibilities," which highlights innovative solutions to longstanding societal challenges and is produced from the studios of the Mainstream Media Project. A 1967 graduate of Cornell University, Mark served from 1991-1998 as a program consultant on peace and world order issues for the Compton Foundation.
 

Halimah Collingwood schedules interviews on syndicated programs, and public and commercial stations nationwide. She has extensive experience in radio as a producer, programmer, and engineer, and for the past twelve years has been host of a weekly World Music program entitled "Ethnic Excursions" on public radio station KHSU-FM in Arcata, California. She was the Program Director for the Humboldt Arts Council, organizing exhibitions and concerts throughout the community. Halimah attended San Jose State University but dropped out to pursue her musical career, singing with several bands including Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks. She is a founding member of the Arcata Interfaith Gospel Choir and also sings with a local Balkan Choir. Besides people, Halimah loves music, theatre, dance and traveling. She completed her degree in 1990 from Humboldt State University with a B.A. in Philosophy.
 

Naihma researches, coordinates, recruits guests and schedules interviews with local and regional hosts in the Spanish language radio across the Nation. Born and raised in Cholula, Puebla in Mexico, she came to the United States in 2000. From a social activist family background, she understands and is aware of the terrible gaps concerning social justice, education and poverty. Prior to becoming a resident of Arcata, Naihma did extensive traveling around the world and within her own country to observe, understand and experience other cultures as well as her own. She has experience working with and for the people of all ages, and loves working with children. When she is not working she is with her husband, stepdaughter and two dogs, studying seaweeds, microorganisms and diving in the cold Pacific Northwest waters. Naihma holds a double BS in Marine Biology and Zoology from Humboldt State University.
 

Jimmy Durchslag schedules interviews with national, international and syndicated media as part of the Guests on Call program. Jimmy has been involved in media as a radio programmer, as owner of a record label and as one of the founders of KMUD, a local community radio station. He has managed several nonprofit organizations and businesses, including a community clinic and a large catalog company. An active musician, Jimmy plays trombone with several local groups. Jimmy graduated magna cum laude in English from Yale University.
 

Don began as Managing Director late in 2004 to help make the transitions that accompany rapid growth easier and more fun. Coming from a successful background in business management and consulting work with co-ops, Native Americans, young entrepreneurs and others, Don truly appreciates having the opportunity to work in the rarefied atmosphere of dedication and passion that circulates at the Mainstream Media Project.
 

Jennifer Hanan schedules interviews on local and regional radio stations in 20 states, and D.C. Prior to joining MMP, she spent years traveling, studying how other cultures solve their social, economic and environmental needs. Jennifer landed in Arcata, California and lived there for ten years, serving an elected four year term on the Arcata City Council. She has spoken at various conferences and media events, nationally and internationally, about her experiences as a grassroots organizer around issues of urban sprawl, protecting local environments and the various social programs that she participated in. Jennifer holds a BA in social work from Humboldt State University. She enjoys traveling, biking and dancing and currently resides in New Mexico.
 

Tazsa Hartwell performs a myriad of duties for the Mainstream Media Project. Her responsibilities encompass (but are not restricted to) handling the minute details of staff support to coordinating the availability of Mainstream Media’s radio program, “A World of Possibilities” to overseas listeners in China and Taiwan. Tazsa has spent a number of years living in Mainland China where she taught college English and acquired an education in Mandarin, Sinology, and martial arts. Here in the US, Tazsa fills her time in constant devotion to her amazingly talented and gifted daughter, Maiya, and her adorable canine companion, Kootinae. Tazsa is continuing her education in International Studies at Humboldt State University.
 

Chuck Johnson is the audio engineer for MMP’s weekly radio program, “A World of Possibilities.” In addition to making the show sparkle, he also maintains the audio computing equipment and recording studio. Chuck has been in the audio world for over 20 years - touring the country playing music, operating a recording studio, engineering live sound, managing a music store, and manufacturing specialized computers for the audio and film industries.
 

Bonnie MacGregor researches topics, pre-searches news hooks, frames the issues, recruits interview guests, and briefs the staff for GOC alerts. She guides the research and development of the spokesperson database and GOC related website content. For 30 years Bonnie developed programs and collaborations that provided services and opportunities to people. She intensively worked on environmental education, domestic hunger, aging, homelessness, family violence, substance abuse, developmental disabilities, and poverty rights. She conducted research designed to inform public policy at the local, state, and national levels. Bonnie received an A.B. from UC Berkeley in Social Sciences and a M.Phil in Intellectual History from Yale.
 

Malia’s work at MMP covers a wide spectrum of tasks including writing and research for A World of Possibilities radio programs, development and external communications. Malia graduated with Highest Honors from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2000 with dual B.A. degrees in Environmental Studies with a concentration in international development studies and environmental policy, and a B.A. in Fine Arts. Malia has worked as a researcher, oral historian, reporter, photographer, and conference organizer. She has traveled and worked in Cuba, Central America and throughout Asia.
 

Cathy works in collaboration with the "A World of Possibilities" radio program team. While at Mainstream Media Project, you will find her coordinating guests and interviews as well as providing topic-specific and guest research for upcoming programs. She seeks to invite diverse and solution oriented guests for each program in the hopes that the unique stories and perspectives compiled by "A World of Possibilities" will inspire further conversations resulting in positive action. Cathy has worked with many non-profit organizations and businesses as a project organizer, event planner, fundraiser, writer, advocate, and crisis counselor. When not at work, she can usually be found at the beach with her human and canine companions, or with camera in hand seeking new perspectives and capturing life in motion.
 

Chuck Rogers is Executive Producer of MMP’s weekly radio program, “A World of Possibilities.” Prior to coming to MMP, he worked as a journalist for 17 years at CBS and ABC TV and radio stations across the country. He’s done postgraduate work in journalism at Iowa State University, holds a Masters of Public Administration from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and a B.A. degree in Political Science and English from the University of Arkansas.
 

Shirley Santino schedules interviews on radio stations in 15 states. Her previous work experience includes magazine publishing and video production in New York, and television in Eureka, California. She is a staunch public school volunteer and has participated in strategic planning, the Superintendent Advisory Committee and edited a parent/teacher forum newsletter. She also acts in local theaters. Shirley has a B.A. from the University of Michigan.
 

Timothy Silva is the producer and station relations director for MMP’s weekly radio program, “A World of Possibilities.” Timothy has long been committed to encouraging awareness, communication and cooperation in communities. He graduated summa cum laude with a degree in history from the University of Oregon.
 

Rashida researches and develops relations with organizations, spokespeople and station hosts in diverse ethnic communities. She hopes to expand MMP's ability to frame issues and provide a wide range of experiences and thoughtful perspectives on critical topics. She writes the news alerts - helping with research and framing - and handles the logistical support for the media coordinators. In her brief stay on the big blue marble she has been a drama coach, television personality, horseback riding instructor, radio host, carriage driver and always - a writer and photographer. She interned at the Sacramento News And Review, and helped to report and produce an adjunct segment to KQED’s monthly California Health Dialogues that aired on KHSU in the spring of 2003. In her spare time, she scribbles short stories on napkins; plugs away at the next Great American Novel; and combs the beaches with her "little man in a dog suit," Echo. A graduate of Humboldt State University, Rashida holds a B.A. in Journalism with a minor in Studio Art (Photography)
 

Rhonda has worked in accounting for 30 years. Her work has been predominately with not-for-profits, both as a consultant and on staff. She has audited businesses as an IRS Revenue Agent, passed the CPA exam, and was a tax preparer and Enrolled Agent with the IRS. She has a BA in Accounting/Management from Sonoma State University. In addition, she holds a Certificate in Landscape Design and Management from Lane Community College in Eugene, Oregon.





Who We Are
Founded in 1995, the Mainstream Media Project is a nonprofit public education and strategic communications organization that uses the mainstream broadcast media to raise public awareness about new approaches to longstanding issues. We pursue our mission through two complementary programs: our Guests on Call program that issues media alerts to regional and national media markets and books radio interviews with guest experts; and we produce an award-winning syndicated radio program, A World of Possibilities.
