All Condit, All the Time
With Its Focus on Stories Like the Gary Condit Affair, Has the Media Become Our Ultimate Weapon of Mass Distraction?
September 03, 2001 |
|
Not since the Monica Lewinsky scandal has America seen a media frenzy on the scale of the one that has exploded in newspapers and on the airwaves about Gary Condit. The California Congressmans alleged affair with missing government intern Chandra Levy has been reported in excruciating detail and with mounting sensationalism.
News editors have long argued that they give the people what they want. But do we really want this diet of drivel or are we being force-fed junk news to sell more ads?
What topics are the media neglecting in pursuit of the latest chapter in the Condit saga? What problems are we not facing and what solutions are we not finding because our attention is so distracted? Does the American public want or need to know about the moral shortcomings of an undistinguished elected official?

Founded in 1995, the Mainstream Media Project is a nonprofit public education and strategic communications organization that uses the mainstream broadcast media to raise public awareness about new approaches to longstanding issues. We pursue our mission through two complementary programs: our Guests on Call program that issues media alerts to regional and national media markets and books radio interviews with guest experts; and we produce an award-winning syndicated radio program, A World of Possibilities.
