The Bush Energy Plan

A Real Solution to Soaring Demand and Skyrocketing Prices?

Thirteen hundred new power plants. Greater reliance on nuclear energy. “Clean” coal plants. Oil drilling on untouched public lands.

The Bush administration proposes to increase our fossil fuel supply while downplaying the role of conservation as an attack on the American way of life. But many energy experts focus instead on reducing demand through conservation and increased energy efficiency.

In light of the May 17 announcement of the administration’s new energy plan, Americans are facing tough questions about the future impact of the energy decisions we make today.

  • Is this a real energy crisis, a power grab by greedy energy wholesalers, or the predictable result of political decisions made over the past decade?

  • What role should conservation and energy-efficiency play in our long-term plans? Is conservation a mere “moral virtue” or our most cost-effective strategy?

  • Are we as a nation prepared to embrace a new generation of nuclear power plants and drill in pristine wilderness areas to produce more energy? Or should we put our money into developing new energy sources like solar and wind that have less impact on the environment?

During June of 2001, MMP assembled some of the country’s leading experts in nuclear power, cleaner-burning coal plants, the environmental impacts of oil drilling, and the feasibility of renewable energy. In all, we scheduled 41 radio and television interviews in 14 states. Of these, 21 were regionally, nationally or globally syndicated.
